Natural Disasters Unit | Reading of Differentiated Passages & Jigsaw Activity

$8.00Price

Teach your students about natural disasters and extreme weather through interactive, inquiry-based lessons that build reading comprehension, interpersonal, critical thinking, problem solving and informative writing skills. This ready-to-use resource includes teacher-led instruction, differentiated reading passages, collaborative activities, and writing activities that help students understand the causes, dangers, and safety measures associated with each type of natural disaster.

Students begin by activating their background knowledge and exploring the topic through visually engaging teacher slides that introduce key concepts while embedding daily learning objectives and agendas. They complete a KWL chart to connect prior knowledge, ask meaningful questions, and reflect on their learning throughout the unit.

The centerpiece of the unit is a collaborative jigsaw activity. Students become "experts" on one natural disaster by reading an informational passage that explains:

  • What the natural disaster is

  • Where it occurs

  • Why it is dangerous

  • How people can stay safe

To support all learners, the reading passages are differentiated with three levels:

  • Beginner readers (B)

  • Intermediate readers (I)

  • Advanced readers ready for a challenge (C)

After becoming experts, students create presentation slides to teach their classmates about their assigned natural disaster while completing a graphic organizer to record important information from learned from other presenters.

To reinforce learning, students complete an interactive quiz that checks for understanding in an engaging way.

The unit concludes with an informative writing task in which students explain three essential items every family should include in an emergency kit. Students support their ideas by elaborating on why each item is important for survival, strengthening both their writing and critical thinking skills.

As an added bonus, vocabulary cards are included to reinforce key academic language and support classroom discussions.
